The Heavens & The Veil – Rent

The Gospel According To Mark

Most readers do not get to fall in love with Mark’s account. It has its own beauty in simplicity. To him who goes into study he will discover something more than past the surface. There are many hidden gems in this account scribed by John Mark, the missionary companion of Joseph Barnabas and couson of Matthew the Evangelist, who scribed the Gospel account attributed to his namesake. I hope by the end of this article you are more convinced of the deity of Jesus Christ, if you had doubts before. The Father and the Spirit testify of the Son.

Mark alone of all 4 writers-scribes lay out the life of Christ in the classic Hebrew Chiastic literary style. Just like how Dr. Eli Lizorkin pointed out the Chiastic style of John 5.That is unfortunately buried in sub-par translation efforts as well as the meddling of the translators’ transcript by Sir Francis Bacon, the editor of the King James 1611.

I will now get to the first two “brackets” of Mark’s chiastic structure: A-B … B’-A’.

A – The witness, John, pointing to Y’shua (Mark 1| 1-8) as the One. John filled the role of the forerunner.
B – The witness of both cosmic proportion (Father’s voice, the cosmo opening) and earthly (His second cousin performing the mikveh) proportion, acknowledging that Y’shua is The Son of the Almighty. (Mark 1 | 9-11) It is in this narrative were the heavens were rent, torn apart, translated from the Greek word “schizo”, meaning split.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open [Gk. schizo] and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[d] with you I am well pleased.”

B’ – The witness of both cosmic proportion (an invisible hand tearing into two the veil) and earthly (the centurion posted near the cross) proportion, acknowledging as a bookend that Y’shua is The Son of the Almighty (Mark 15| 38-39). The rending of the Veil answers to the rending of the heavnes in chapter 1. The word schizo is used again by Mark.

38 And the curtain of the temple was torn [schizo] in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[h] breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

In both instances, Y’shua received two witnesses as heaven and earth were called to give Him the holy witness.

A’ – The young man in appearance, the angel posted at the tomb cavity, guarding the burial cloths. He proceeded to point {“See the place where they laid Him”) to the evidence before the tomb visitors. He served as the forerunner of the news of the resurrection of the Lord Y’shua. (Mark 16| 1-7).

And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

This answers to the opening bookend of the forerunner John preparing the way for Y’shua.

In A, the Lord was immersed by John into the living water of Jordan. As He rose from the water surface we came to B, the voice that bears witness about His identity as the Son of God.

In A’, the Lord had been buried in the tomb at the garden. As He rose from the dead, He broke a spiritual barrier as He went across in B’. The voice that bore witness to his death as the Son of God by the Roman centurion.

The rending of the skies in chapter 1 is setting a stage for the rending of the veil in Mark 15.

Mark 15:38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to the bottom.

In 1 Kings 6|2 Jeremiah the Prophet records that Solomon’s temple was 30 cubits (45 feet) high. The first century Jewish historian Josephus records that Herod extended the temple’s height to 40 cubits high (60 feet) tall. He also records that the veil was four inches thick.

Herod had no authority to alter the blueprints of God’s house in Jerusalem. Herod’s Temple is fraught with manipulation. The Lord Y’shua never entered the building. The rending of the veil is secondarily demonstrating of the Father’s disapproval of man tweaking His Design.

Graphically, the beginning of the Son’s ministry at Jordan in water and the end of the Son’s ministry on Calvary by pouring out water from His body, are capped with the image of the approval of the hand of the Holy Spirit.

One of the soldiers, however, plunged his spear into Jesus’ side, and at once blood and water poured out.

The Holy Spirit testifies of the Son.

At Jordan, the heavens were rent and the Holy Spirit descended upon the head of Y’shua as a sign of visible anointing. The Spirit rested on Y’shua as He came up from the water.

10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.

In Mark 15, the temple veil was rent from the top, torn by the hand of the Holy Spirit. Mark included a detail of direction in that the tear went from top to bottom. At 60 feet high, the only explanation for tearing a 4 inch thick woven fabric is by supernatural means. At the chiastic marker B, the motion is also noted in the travel direction of the Holy Spirit “descending” like a dove on the Lord. Mark did not bring closure to where the Spirit went after that scene. He made the point of the chiastic beauty of the Son of God descending from the heavens at the marker and was about to descend to Sheol at the closing marker in Mark 15. It is nothing short of beauty and amazement.

Rend – cause great emotional pain to (a person or their heart). The Greek original word is schizo (split).

In both scenes, something ended and something else began. Can we spot it?

The ministry of the Gospel by the Lord began salvation by God toward mankind. It also ended the 400 years of silence from God to Israel. Between Malachi and Matthew, not a single prophet was sent to the disobedience Hellenized Israel under Seleucid and Roman rules. It ended when the forerunner John was ministering to repentant sinners at Jordan.

The ministry of the Crucifixion began atonement for man’s violations of the laws. It also ended the years of Israel as the sole beneficiary of His grace. This grace is now offered to the nations to whomsoever loves Y’shua.

At Jordan, upon the tearing, the heavens were rent open to reveal other dimensions (the heavenlies) from one to another (earth). On Calvary, upon the tearing of the Temple veil a few stone throws away on the other side of the Sheep Gate, the holy God of Israel is now become accessible to anyone through His Son, Y’shua, and through Him only. He then went to rest in the earth for 3 days and 3 nights.

Carl Sagan quotes will make you realize how precious life is ...

The temple veil was fashioned to represent the cosmos. The tearing of the veil at the ninth hour, or at 3PM, as Y’shua breathed His last signifies that Y’shua did successfully remove the barrier between the mortals and the holy of holies.

Y’shua is the only Way. Asher haDerekh.

It is only the fulfillment of the rent heavens when Father spoke of His only beloved Son at the same crossing at Jordan by Joshua and the children of Israel as they took the Land in 1,273 BC.

The Veil

The making of the Veil came by instruction from El Elyon.

Shemot 2631 “And you shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it. 32 And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, with hooks of gold, on four bases of silver. 33 And you shall hang the veil from the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there within the veil. And the veil shall separate for you the Holy Place from the Most Holy. 34 You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the Most Holy Place. 35 And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand on the south side of the tabernacle opposite the table, and you shall put the table on the north side.

The Temple Veil only was a representative of the cosmo where God is transcendent (existence or experience beyond the normal or physical level) and omnipresent.

Y’shua took the Land for all whom He called and whosoever follows Him to paradeisos.
