1 Qorinthiym 13
1 Corinthians 13:1-2 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Way of Love
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
Paul and the Qorinthiym community went back some. They were unruly, forgettable, rowdy, rich in the signs gift set, exuberant and untamed.
This passage was especially dedicated to them. Let us see what they got.
- Clearly they speak in tongues. They speak two prophetic tongues. The human tongues, the existing languages, that one might preach to a visitor from a foreign land. They also speak the prayer language that only Elohiym hears and receives.
- Clearly they exercise visions in the prophetic powers.
- Clearly they have the gift of interpretation in understanding all mysteries and knowledge.
Yet, to express in sounds without compassion and TLC, the prophetic utterances come to noice, as a metal thrash on distortion.
Yet, to express mental and spiritual cognitive prowess and not have faith, this gets interesting. Paul says to remove mountains. Mountains obvi here do not refer to the kind that takes a caterpillar or a bobcat to clear. Here, the mountains stand for spiritual strongholds. In that only faith as insignificant as a common mustard seed is required to dispel and cast out. But one thing is missing and that is love. Paul says without, he be nothing.
Eashoa his Lord, our Lord commands how we are to give authority to spiritual stronghold in Matthew 17. His words will never pass away.
“Because your faith is so small,” He replied; “for I solemnly declare to you that if you have faith like a mustard-seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Remove from this place to that,’ and it will remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.
Paul did not say that the spiritual malevolent stronghold cannot be removed by faith without love. The deliverance ministry may well happen. But the minister is nothing. It means you won’t get the credit for it.
I think this is happening to many believers on a daily basis. To labor without love. I see people bashing the heads of their brethren and sistren on the head with the Bible. They are not short on the next verse. Worse, I witness a few yell holler, “Read your bible!”
I am not denying that they won’t be able to make the point and even deliver a truth to the listener. But where they operate without love, they are nothing.
But what does it mean? When a believer becomes the level of nothingness. We shall obtain the interpretation from Revelation 2. Ephesiym suffered from the same condition. They labor hard and are tirelessly doing the work. But they lost their first love. They are on auto-pilot bashing the heads of others. They are cruising along with displaying their memorization of Scripture. But without TLC and compassion they are told by the Lord that they will receive nothing for all the work.
2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’
That nothing-ness that Paul spoke of in 1 Qorinthiym 13 is interpreted perfectly in the Lord’s warning to Ephesiym. They will not be saved. They will not be granted access to the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
Again, love-less believers, pastors, super Christians, repent. And remember once you were basked in that love for the Lord and for His flock.
